Silicon steel sheet is essentially an extremely low carbon steel plate with a silicon mass fraction of 0.5% to 5%. According to the working conditions, it can be divided into silicon steel sheets used under strong magnetic fields (mostly used in the power industry, which is the most common amount of the largest) and silicon steel sheets used under weak magnetic fields (mostly used in the telecommunications industry), as well as silicon steel sheets used under power frequency and silicon steel sheets used under high frequency. The silicon steel sheet used at high frequency, in order to reduce the eddy current loss at high frequency, usually adopts the thickness of O. 1 ~ 0.2ram, and the one used for pulse transformers can be as thin as 0.05mm or less.

Oriented silicon steel is used in transformers, and the higher the degree of orientation is required, the better. This is because the higher the degree of orientation, the smaller the magnetostriction (the so-called magnetostriction is the phenomenon of ferromagnetic substances stretching or shrinking when magnetized, which is the main cause of transformer noise), the better the magnetic properties of the silicon steel sheet, and the iron loss is reduced. Non-oriented silicon steel is used in motor manufacturing.
