Silicon steel, also known as electrical steel or transformer steel, is commonly used in the construction of electric motors due to its unique magnetic properties. These properties make it an ideal material for the core of electric motors. Here's why silicon steel is used for electric motor cores:

High Magnetic Permeability: Silicon steel has a high magnetic permeability, which means it can easily conduct and concentrate magnetic flux. This property is essential for creating strong magnetic fields within the motor, which is necessary for its operation.

Low Core Losses: Silicon steel is designed to have low core losses when subjected to alternating magnetic fields. This means it experiences minimal energy dissipation in the form of heat, making it highly efficient for energy conversion in electric motors.

Low Hysteresis Losses: Hysteresis losses occur when a magnetic material undergoes cyclic magnetization and demagnetization. Silicon steel has low hysteresis losses, meaning it retains its magnetic properties efficiently even when the magnetic field is reversed multiple times. This reduces energy losses and heat generation in the motor.

Reduced Eddy Current Losses: Silicon steel sheets used in motor cores are often laminated and insulated to minimize eddy current losses. Eddy currents are circulating electric currents induced within the material when it's exposed to changing magnetic fields. The lamination and insulation help restrict the flow of these currents, further improving motor efficiency.

Controlled Grain Orientation: Silicon steel is processed to have a specific grain orientation, typically along the rolling direction. This controlled grain orientation enhances its magnetic properties and minimizes losses, making it even more suitable for electric motors.
